An abused diesel engine will cause big problems - engine/turbo/diesel pump etc. But a well driven - well looked after - D4D diesel will give you 500 000km! Find out what you need to look for in a used diesel engine. If those boxes are ticked then 150 000-200 000km on the D4D is no problem at all.

Only the 1.4 D-4D (or 90D) of the Auris and the 3.0 D-4D of the Hilux and Land Cruiser are "pure" Toyota. In the Yaris range, the diesel option has been removed in Spain (although it is still offered in Europe), in the same way that the Aygo does not have this engine available, nor did it have it in the first generation.
A diesel engine in good condition should produce no visible smoke from the exhaust, under most operating conditions. A short puff of smoke when an engine is accelerated under load may be acceptable, due to the lag before the turbocharger speed and air flow is able to match the volume of diesel injected into the cylinders.
